Review of Huygens HK dataset for PSA The HK archive contains a lot of useful information and documentation. The structure is clear and logical. The aerodynamic database, probe mass/inertia properties, in-flight checkout reports, altitude, and spin rate will be extremely useful to data users. I didn't look at the EXTRAS directory. I found a couple of major problems. 1) The only definitions of archived quantities that I found were in OVERVIEW.TXT. Examples include "To G-switch Time-out B counter" and "Probe temperature 3B PJM B". Where does the user go to find out more about these quantities? A few sentences on each quantity would be very helpful, plus references to one or two documents where these quantities are discussed. The exact locations of some of the sensors, such as the temperature sensors, are important for interpreting their measurements. Are those locations specified anywhere? 2) Measurement uncertainties. All measurements have errors. What are the errors/uncertainties on these measurements? Minor issues. EAICD.pdf should be .PDF for consistency The Lebreton Nature paper included supplemental information. Add that to the archive. Papers in the Publications subdirectory should be included in REFERENCES.CAT Poor English in DATASET.CAT: At the time of archiving, there are a still some unsolved engineering problems: Poor English in DATASET.CAT: proximitor sensor VOLDESC.CAT has some binary stuff at the end that looked ugly and illegible INSTRUMENT.CAT: Define variables in Gaborit equations (or at least the important ones) How many ms-2 are in 1 g? 10? 9.8? Something else? Please define g in the LABEL file that accompanies each TABLE of measurements given in g. INSTRUMENT.CAT: Several papers are cited as, eg, Lebreton et al., 2005, not LEBRETON2005 REFERENCES.CAT is incomplete MISSION.CAT cites JPLD-5564, which is not in REFERENCES.CAT HK_CDMS_CASU_D7005A.LBL and others: FORMAT = F?? HK_CDMS_CDMUB_D2002A.LBL and others: UNIT = Volt. Everything else in this label is in capitals. Is this uncapitalized for a reason? Many other units are also written in uncapitalized form. Units should be written out as words, not abbreviated. A for Amperes is confusing. HK_CDMS_PROXSENSORA_D3002F.LBL: UNIT = m. If this is an altitude in metres, then something strange is happening in the accompanying TABLE. It looks very similar to D3002S, which is a dimensionless number HK_CDMS_PROXSENSORA_D3002F.LBL: NAME = "CALIB data". data or DATA? OVERVIEW.TXT: It would be useful to cite this in AAREADME.TXT HK_PDRS_TXB_R2002A.LBL: UNIT = Watt and FORMAT = F?? HK_SPIN_RATE.TAB: Are positive and negative quantities defined anywhere? RADAR_ALTITUDE_CALIBRATION.LBL: DOCUMENT_NAME = "HUYGENS HRADigital Altitude Data Calibration" Spacing needed? DATASET.CAT: publications of one article in Nature, one in Journal of Geophysical Research, and a number of proceedings. Cite these articles in REFERENCES.CAT
