We have developed a model describing the effect of the pattern of
shadows cast upon Saturn by its rings. Such shadows can significantly
reduce sunlight reaching Saturn's atmosphere, as the rings are optically
thick at many wavelengths. The attenuation of sunlight is both
spatially and temporally variable, and can lead to interesting effects
in Saturn's atmosphere, such as steep temperature and electron density
gradients.
